Let’s Talk About It: Why Mental Wellbeing Matters More Than Ever (Especially for Men)

We all have mental health. Just like our physical health, it can be good, bad, or somewhere in between—and it changes over time. But unlike a broken leg or the flu, poor mental health isn’t always visible, and it’s not always easy to talk about.

And yet, talking about it—checking in, being there for each other, and making time for our own wellbeing—is one of the most powerful things we can do.

Why Mental Wellbeing Matters

In today’s fast-paced world, it's easy to put mental health on the back burner. Whether you're juggling family life, managing work stress, studying, or simply trying to stay afloat in difficult times, the emotional load can be heavy. And without time to pause, we can find ourselves burning out—quietly.

Mental health problems are far more common than many people realise. According to Mind UK, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health issue each year. And mental wellbeing isn’t just about diagnosed conditions like depression or anxiety—it’s also about how we feel day-to-day, how we cope with stress, how connected we feel, and how supported we are.

Male Mental Health: Breaking the Silence

While mental health affects everyone, there’s a silent crisis happening—especially among men.

In the UK:

  • Three times as many men as women die by suicide.

  • Men aged 40–49 have the highest suicide rates in the UK (Office for National Statistics).

  • Only 36% of NHS talking therapy referrals are for men (NHS Digital).

Why? Because men are still far less likely to open up, seek help, or even admit they’re struggling. The pressure to “man up” or “get on with it” runs deep. But we need to challenge that. Mental health doesn’t discriminate, and asking for help isn’t a weakness—it’s a courageous and vital step.

Let’s remind each other: it’s OK to not be OK.

Everyday Ways to Look After Mental Health

You don’t need to book a retreat or make major lifestyle changes to support your mental wellbeing (though those can help!). Sometimes, it’s about small, daily acts of kindness to yourself and those around you:

  • Check in with a friend—especially the one who “seems fine.”

  • Switch off from screens and spend a few minutes outdoors.

  • Write it down. Journaling can be incredibly therapeutic.

  • Practice mindfulness—even just 5 minutes of breathing or colouring can help.

  • Reach out. Whether it's a loved one, a GP, or a helpline—there is always someone who will listen.
